I recently opened a Penthouse magazine, dated September 1997. This prized copy was the 28th Anniversary Issue and reminded me of how I cherished your magazine as a young man. Much like looking at a picture of your first love and feeling a strange mix of romance and heartbreak, this Penthouse magazine left me with a deep nostalgia and yearning.
There was a day when Penthouse spoke to me and men like me.
The Playboy Playmates never really did it for me. They are too cookie cutter, blond, and bland. Beautiful yes, sexual no. Call me crazy but I just never got the appeal of the 'Girl Next Door'.
That said, to this day I love Playboy magazine, but it's no jest when I say, "I readPlayboy for the articles." The articles and that's about it.
The Penthouse Pets were the ones who did it for me. They're more exotic and unbelievably sexy. More brunettes. Many Pets had the dark, sexy Eastern European look that still does it for me to this day. Penthouse was more sexual, even a little raunchy.
In the heyday that was the 90's, I was always waiting for the next issue of Penthouse.
On top of the gorgeous models was the Man Behind The Magazine, Bob Guccione. The man was a publishing genius, pushing the envelope while staying sexy and appealing. |
Why the long face, Gooch? |
Much like one of my employees who is going thru a phase of only sleeping with women 15 years his senior, I suspect Mr. Guccione had a few of his own fetishes I don't understand. The 90's - excuse the pun - brought out Bob's taste for certain bodily fluids.
The September 1997 Pet of the Month was Rocki Roads. She was a fantastic looking brunette woman with amazing breasts. She was a "10" only because the scale stops there. Rocki's saucy pictorial featured her in a number of salacious scenarios, one of which was her pissing into a vessel, then pouring the urine onto her body. |
|
Though this may not be my cup of pe...I mean tea, I do have to applaud Mr. Guccione's courage for daring to push the boundaries of good - and, some may say, salty - taste. Although the pissing was a little weird for me, NJOY NOW still applauds the vision and courage of one of histories greatest publishers: Mr. Bob Guccione, Sr.
Guccione and Penthouse always kept the content fresh, new, and sexy. He once had radio shock jock (and my personal hero) Howard Stern directing a lipstick lesbian photo shoot.
He had hard bodied guys having intercourse with multiple women. Real live penetration and cumshots. This was visionary and artistic journalism - Playboy sure as hell wasn't doing it.
Let's also not forget what magazine first featured the controversial pictorial of a 16-year old Traci Lords (15th Anniversary Issue), as well as unauthorized photos of Madonna. He kept it hotter than Playboy but never went into the toilet humor and genuinely disturbing visual violence of Larry Flynt's Hustler.
Penthouse became the perfect bridge for the adult male that wanted a hot magazine to flesh out all his fantasies with. The Penthouse Forum will never be forgotten. Whether the letters were real or fiction, they were great. I personally may be a better reader because of The Forum. I can certainly read with one hand now. |
|
The purpose of this letter is a plea: bring back my Penthouse!
I respect the decision to give the magazine a more 'lifestyle' edge and try to be more like Playboy and Maxim magazines. The publishing industry is more competitive than it's ever been.
I also understand the reality that 'the kids' just aren't buying magazines anymore; I just took a poll of my younger employees and none of them have bought a magazine or newspaper in over a year. They were raised on the Internet and that's what they know. |
Another reason I want to be Tom Brady. |
|
|
I know there are fewer advertisers willing to be associated with a sexual media property. All this aside, we still need the real Penthouse. The 90's version. The hot, brunette Eastern European women named Nadia, Zuzana, and Veronika.
We need an Anne Hathaway pictorial and interview.
What about a Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen hardcore photo shoot? Don't tell me that wouldn't sell like crazy.
We all want the same thing. We want the Penthouse that made us want to buy the magazine on our 18th birthday. There are plenty of men in their 30's and 40's who feel the same way as I do. |
|
As we do this, I believe Penthouse will become the financially successful monster it once was. It will if we work together. |
|
|
Bob, from one man to another, make the smart business move and take Penthouse back to the salacious glory days of the 90's. We're all behind you.
